Table 1 lists the readability statistics for each of the above eight (8) scenario. The left-hand column lists the name of each scenario. The second column in from the left, lists the number of words in each scenario. The third column in from the left, the (Flesch Readability Ease Score), lists the reading level score of each scenario (See Note 1). The right-hand column (the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Score) lists the overall readability grade level score (See Note 2).

Table 1: Multiple Intelligences Scenario Readability Scores

Notes:

1.  The Flesch Readability Ease (the second column in from the right of Table 1) score rates the eight (8) scenarios on a 100-point scale; the higher the score, the easier it is to understand the scenario.  For most standard documents, one aims for a score somewhere within the 60 to 70 reading range.  The Flesch Readability Ease Score for the eight scenarios averaged out to 64.7.  For the more interested reader, the formula for the Flesch Readability Ease score is: 206.835 – (1.015 x ASL) – (84.6 x ASW), where ASL represents the average sentence length (i.e., the number of words divided by the number of sentences) and where ASW represents the average number of syllables per word (i.e., the number of syllables divided by the number of words).

2.  The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (the extreme right-hand column of Table 1) score rates the same eight (8) scenarios on a U.S.A. grade school level.  For example, a score of 8.0 would mean that an eighth grader could understand the document with ease.  For most standard documents, one aims for a score somewhere within the 7.0 to 8.0 grade reading range.  The average Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Score for the eight scenarios was 7.3.  For the more interested reader, the formula for the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level score is (.39 x ASL) + (11.8 x ASW) – 15.59, where ASL is the average sentence length (i.e., the number of words divided by the number of sentences) and ASW is the average number of syllables per word (i.e., the number of syllables divided by the number of words).
