William
Cameron - Able Seaman
William Cameron was born in 1924 in East River, St. Marys, Nova Scotia.
He grew up and went to school in the quiet rural area, rich in Scottish
heritage. From there he enlisted in the navy at age 17, taking his training
in Sydney, followed by a gunnery course in Halifax. He shipped out for
the next three and half years serving on five different ships, the last
being HMCS Nene. After leaving the navy in 1945, in British Columbia,
Bill worked for the mining industry in the interior of B.C. He logged
on the coast, Vancouver Island and in the Nakusp area, where his parents
lived. There, in 1955 he met and married a nurse from the local hospital,
Ruby Harper. With a partner, Bill started his own logging contracting
company, subsequently moving his headquarters and family north to the
town of Revelstoke. He continued as a logging contractor and road builder
until his retirement in 1972. Although he had filled his leisure time
with flying, skiing, prospecting and sculpting soapstone, Bill continues
to ski in the winter trying to win the "Over the Hill Downhill Race",
prospect for the mother lode and travel whenever Ruby can convince him
he should. Bill and Ruby's daughter, Virginia, her husband, Lyle and their
two daughters, live in nearby Vernon. They continue to live in Revelstoke
on the bank of the Columbia River.
