The majority of the Nobel Prize-winning scientists on EARTH joined together to release a statement claiming civilization could END if changes are not made in less than ONE DECADE in the way we are treating the planet...
This very grave warning was met with near-universal silence from governments, major newspapers and television networks. When asked to comment on the apparent lack of interest in reporting the fact that more than half of the most respected scientists on this planet felt that we were on the bullet train to doom, the influential Washington-Post allowed only that they felt the story was not really newsworthy.
This concept of "newsworthy" is rather interesting in terms of what passes for all the news that's fit to print these days!
PUBLIC INTEREST: if a peeping tom should sneak up to your bedroom window and catch a glimpse of you in your underwear — that person is labeled as a sick pervert. Should they be inept enough to get caught doing so, well they're going to end up in front of a judge and might well see the inside of a jail cell.
IN THE NEWS: you can show up at an airport after a plane crash with your camera crew in tow, stick a microphone and TV camera in the face of any frightened, distraught and grieving family member — intrude into their most private grief by broadcasting that instant all over the globe and you're a journalist. Never mind that there's no real news here for anyone! Everyone already KNOWS that if a member of your family is suddenly killed in an airplane crash, then the family will be distraught — the only way this would be real "news" is if someone were celebrating or having a post-plane-crash-party after their son/daughter/wife/husband was ripped apart and/or incinerated at 600 miles per hour!
The deeper tragedy here is that in reality 99% of what is presented as news are really events over which the viewer has no control and can't possibly influence or alter.
The public becomes passive voyeurs to reportage that is structured and presented as entertainment and to garner ratings points mainly through increasing shock value! Here's some of the stories of the day which were deemed to be newsworthy over the non-news that we are likely doomed if we keep on keeping on and perhaps you can judge for yourself:

House Republicans threaten to resurrect the "Waterwater" issue to sandbag President Clinton in his final term in office.

The parenting plans of one Michael Jackson, 38, and his new wife, Debbie Rowe, 37.
Allegations that some retired army drill sergeants may have used promises of leave and promotion to induce female recruits into having sexual relations in the '80s.
Alger Hiss, died at age 92. (Hiss it may well not be recalled, served almost four years for perjury in a spy scandal pushed by then-freshman congressman Richard M Nixon.) Recently, a Russian General in charge of Intelligence claimed Hiss was not their spy.
In civil court, on his first day on the witness stand, O J Simpson denied under oath murdering his estranged spouse.
The ever continuing adventures of a well-known once royal, redheaded topless toe-sucked talk-show host wannabe.

A book to be published in March 1997 Love & Death: The story of Kurt & Courtney argues that there is enough evidence to reopen the investigation of Kurt Cobain’s suicide as a murder investigation since there were no fingerprints on the shotgun and it is alleged that the suicide note is not even in Kurt's own handwriting. (perhaps it was Richard Nixon's?)

INTERESTING FACT: IF THE WHOLE CURRENT POPULATION OF THE PLANET EARTH LIVED THE WAY THAT CANADIANS DO — AS CITIZENS OF THE "BEST" COUNTRY IN THE WORLD IN WHICH TO LIVE, (ACCORDING TO THE UNITED NATIONS), THE GLOBAL POPULATION WOULD REQUIRE OVER FIVE "PLANET EARTHS" ON WHICH TO LIVE!
THAT SURE GIVES EVERYONE SOMETHING TO AIM FOR! (EH!)
