Home Renovation : Siding

Tips From Experience:

Siding becomes brittle the colder it becomes. If you installing siding during a cold season hammer carefully.

If you are going to install a new window in a wall cut the siding to size instead of removing siding "after the fact".

Have patience when installing the channels and final piece of siding. Carefully measure the final piece of siding to see if the roof isn't a straight surface.

Tips For Installing Siding:

Allow the siding to "float". Leave the nail out about 1/8" or 3 mm so the siding may move slightly as the outdoor temperature fluctuates. Nailing siding tight to the wall causes it to crease when the temperature changes.

Nail in the center of the groove.

Use shims (small pieces of wood) to make the siding appear straight if you are working with a wall that isn't straight.

Use a sharp pair of tin snips to cut the siding to size.
