Egypt's population is growing rapidly and is approaching 65 million. Egyptians are a mixture, descended from the ancient Egyptians, Berbers, sub-Saharan Africans, Arabs, Greeks, and Turks. Most are Sunni Muslims, but more than ten percent are Coptic Christians. Arabic is the official language.
While more than 15 million people now inhabit Cairo, most Egyptians (like those in the photo) continue to live in towns and villages on both banks of the Nile between Aswan and the capital.
